Glam Up Your Gadgets: Part Two

If you missed part one of Glam Up Your Gadgets, check out how skins can easily change the look of cellphones, e-readers, laptops and more.

Now that you’ve got the outside of your devices looking pretty, check out some cool apps that can add a little glam to the inside! These are some of my personal favorites.

Cuptakes (Iphone/Ipad) – Cuptakes is a wallpaper app designed for iphone and ipad users. It includes over 200 “girly” wallpapers ranging from tapestry-like elegant designs to zebra stripes. Some wallpapers even include an icon shelf, icon background squares, or a calendar. The best part of this app is that it’s frequently updated with new designs. I use this one on my ipad, but I’m hoping that one day they’ll come up with an Android version.

WidgetLocker Lockscreen (Android) – This is probably my favorite app on my phone. Widgetlocker allows you to customize the lock screen on your phone in a variety of ways. You can change the background, add clocks, change your sliders, include widgets, and even add shortcuts. I love being able to use a pretty wallpaper on my lock screen, while still using live wallpapers on my home screens. The only issue I have with this app, is that shortcuts you use on the lockscreen might bypass your security options. For that reason I tend to not use shortcuts on it. Currently my lock screen is a minimalist black floral pattern with a quote across the screen – but I change my setup on an almost weekly basis. 🙂

IQuarium HD (Iphone/Ipad) – This was one of my first ipad apps, and I still love it. Iquarium gives you virtual fish to live on your device. I’ve tried alot of aquarium apps, and this is probably the best of the bunch. You start off with one baby fish in a simple tank, and the more you interact with it, the more points you earn. Points will unlock new backgrounds, tank decorations, food to change the fish color, and eventually another fish. This is a beautiful app with realistic movements for the fish and the plants that subtly sway in the water. You can purchase more points or themes, but it’s really unnecessary since so many things can be unlocked just by playing. Be warned, if you don’t feed your fish for a few days they will turn grayish and sickly; but that’s easily remedied by some food, they will recover instantly. (Though it might make you feel guilty for a bit). Neglect them for a full week, and they will die and you’ll be forced to start over. It only takes a minute to feed them though, so they aren’t difficult to keep ‘alive’. This app is a really nice option if you leave the screen on while charging.

Blue Skies Live Wallpaper (Android) – I have a large collection of live wallpapers, and this is one I go back to again and again. This wallpaper is a beautiful moving cloud scene that appears as though you are flying through it. The lighting changes with the time of day as the sun sets and the moon and little stars come out at night. In the paid version, each time you get a text message a balloon will float across the sky.

Weather HD (Iphone/Ipad) – There is definitely no shortage of weather apps and widgets out there, but finding one that’s beautiful as well as functional is a bit of a challenge. Weather HD manages to do just that. It shows your current weather with a corresponding weather animation, and these are some of the prettiest weather scenes you will find anywhere. Rolling clouds, spinning windmills, raindrops, and wind blowing through fields of grain. There is also a holiday mode that adds in some lovely extras. I filled in my app with various famous cities, so that I can scroll through and check out weather around the world and enjoy the animations.

Go Launcher Ex (Android) – If you haven’t tried a home replacement for your Android, this is a great place to start. Go Launcher has alot of options to customize the look and behavior of your screens and app drawer. It’s also easy to use and you can find plenty of free or paid themes to change the icons and the wallpaper. There are many other home replacements out there, this is one of several that I use. Customization is the absolute best part of Android, so be sure to check out all the different ways you can make your phone unique.

These are just a handful of the many great apps out there that can personalize and pretty up your devices. Got a suggestion for another great app? Post it in the comments! Happy downloading!
